I’m An Author!

by | Mar 31, 2011 |

People often ask me what I did to keep busy while I was pregnant. Well, one of the things I did was work on making another baby: my first book! It’s called Kara Goucher’s Running for Women, and it will be published officially next Tuesday (April 5) by Touchstone. It’s a pretty comprehensive collection of tips and advice for women runners, especially beginners. Every topic from getting started to diet, motivation to injury prevention, is covered.

What makes this book a little different from other books for women runners is that all of the information is based on my experience. I don’t really consider myself a coach, so I’m not comfortable just telling runners what to do. What I am comfortable doing is saying, “Here’s what has worked for me, and I think it can probably work for you, too.” When I talk to other runners, they seem curious to know what I do anyway, so I’m hopeful that more than a few people will be interested in what I have to say!

Mine is not the only perspective in the book, though. I’ve also included bits of wisdom from some of the many people who have played critical roles in my success, including my current coach, Alberto Salazar, and my active release therapist, Justin Whittaker.

I have to admit, putting the book together was harder than I thought it would be. I have a whole new respect for people like Adam Bean (who helped me with my book) who do it for a living. It was a worthwhile experience, and I’m proud of how it came out, but I’m happy that both of my new babies have been delivered so I can fill my days with running again!

Congratulations! I am always impressed by the quality of your writing and I am happy you wrote a book. I will buy it as soon as it is available! I am a former elite volleyball player (Team Canada), but I am an awfull, awfull runner. I don’t understant why I am so slow as a runner while I was such a powerfull volleyball player. I need all the advices I can get! I am sure your book will be a pleasure to read. And keep writing. You have a real talent for it!

Kara, I was so excited to see your book at Powell’s and picked up a copy a few days ago. I love the snippets about what has worked for you, and the fact that you’re so straightforward about this being your perspective alone. I also thought the sections about your struggles with weight, food, and motivation were very helpful, and that it was brave of you to be so honest about these topics. Terrific stuff! I’m about halfway through and am looking forward to reading the rest this weekend.

    HI Kara!
My name is Laurie and I am a marathon runner also. I follow your career closely. You have been such an inspiration to me as a runner.I often times find myself thinking of you and all of your hard work to get to the top when I feel like I want to give up on a long run or if I don’t feel like getting out of bed to get my run in for the day.You definately keep me motivated! I was so excited to hear you are running the Boston marathon because I will be running it too. I would love to meet you.
I’m excited to purchase your book.I know it will be helpful.
Congratulations on your first book and your son.
Best of luck in Boston! I know you will rock, you always do!!
    Hope to see you there.

Hi Kara! I’ve been a fan of yours for quite some time now (even painting my fingernails black when I’m going for a PR because I read somewhere that doing so reminds you to be tough) and have always wanted to see you race. I am still trying to qualify for Boston, but have decided to fly up (from my home in Jax, FL) to cheer you on in a few weeks. I’m bringing a friend who has just started running. She’s called me crazy for years, but now that she’s had a taste she’s hooked. She’s training for her first 5K and for support, will likely receive a “Run with a Heart of Bold” card from me, as I give one to any friend of mine whose tackling a distance for the first time. I will definitely check out your new book and refer her to the same. Know that you will have a fan out there on April 18 from the Sunshine State, probably cheering my head off to the point of hysteria! Thank you for being my inspiration.

I am enjoying your book…downloaded it on my nook yesterday and it is a really good read–the perfect combo of training advice, inspiration and your personal story. Great job!

  • Brian Dixey

Ok, I’m not a woman, but I bought this book anyway. Skipping over the occasion question and answer from letters you’ve received from woman fans, this book has actually been a great help to me. I had much trouble in the past year with getting over shin splits, in fact I really couldn’t seem to get past that. This book has many great tips and is motivating, even for a man. Great read! Thank you- from Boston, MA

  • Elizabeth Winter

Dear Kara, Your book just came in the mail yesterday and I was up until midnight reading. I love it! Are you going to be doing a book tour? Best wishes! Elizabeth

Kara, I just finished your book and absolutely loved it.
I have been a runner all my life (I’m 44), running some 5k, 10k and a couple of halfs, but after reading your book I think I will take the courage to run a marathon. Thanks for the motivation.

  • Alexa

Kara, Will you be doing a book tour at all? We’d love to see you in the Twin Cities!
